Repetition

For my user first project I had started a small sketchbook. In my sketchbook I have started to create a small range of ideas to look at repetition using toilet paper as a material. Looking at repetition has also gave me incentive to research and show compulsive obsessive behaviors.

Everyday processes such as housework or even work in general are mundane but they have routine and repetition which maybe causes and leads to obsessive behaviors. I also believe this idea has a relevance to Monia’s story of why she had chosen the toilet roll. Monia that morning had gone into her boyfriends flat and began picking up the empty toilet rolls off his flat mate’s bathroom floor. Monia considers herself a well organised and tidy person who will tidy someone else’s mess if needed to.

I have started some ideas of how to show repetition using toilet paper. I have used processes like folding, tearing, cutting, shredding and scrunching to do so.

Looking back to the first day of the workshop, I was at a standstill with my project. I had ideas and thoughts however I felt restricted on how to show these using a coat hanger. On the day of the workshop I became more confused, and am I doing the ‘right’ thing. I also thought swopping an object, starting something new would pull me back even more. However since doing the user first and swopping ideas and objects with other people I have been able to link my work with my object. Therefore I am going to continue using toilet paper as I believe I have found it easier and more useful to show repetition rather than coat hangers
